UCLA Center for Healthy Climate Solutions Names Marta A. Segura as Director
Marta A. Segura, a renowned expert on climate and health, has been named director of the UCLA Center for Healthy Climate Solutions (C-Solutions).
Segura joins C-Solutions after serving as the founding chief heat officer and director of the City of Los Angeles’s Climate Emergency Mobilization Office (CEMO) and with more than 30 years in leadership roles in philanthropy, environmental justice advocacy, and as a thought leader and consultant in the nonprofit sector.
In her new role as director of C-Solutions, Segura will lead our efforts to translate rigorous climate and health research into relevant policy, partnerships, and community impact. She will scale heat-mapping and data tools, expand translation of air pollution and wildfire data, deepen the research-to-policy pipeline, and grow philanthropic partnerships to strengthen the center’s work at the intersection of extreme heat, air quality, and public health equity.
C-Solutions focuses on protecting people and communities from the health effects of climate change and equips decision-makers with solutions that reduce inequities and benefits health, the environment and the economy. Alongside its partners, the center uses evidence-based practices that improve health and resilience, now and for generations to come.
Segura steps into the role of center director at a moment when state and local climate leadership matters more than ever, as California increasingly looks to community-informed science to guide policy on extreme heat, air quality, and climate resilience. Her priority is ensuring C-Solutions’ research reaches policymakers, community organizations, and philanthropic partners positioned to act on it.
“I’ve spent my career at the intersection of climate risks, health, and equity, in both difficult times for our nation and also more welcoming eras for social change,” Segura shared. “I’m honored to bring that experience home to UCLA, my alma mater, at a moment when connecting climate and health to solutions for our communities is desperately needed.”
